  • How should clinical waste be disposed of?

    In healthcare settings, soft clinical waste is most commonly disposed of into the orange waste stream where waste is known or suspected to be infectious.
    According to clinical waste regulations, the yellow waste stream must be chosen if your soft waste is known or suspected to be contaminated medicinally or with category A pathogens such as Ebola, Anthrax and HIV (cultures).   • Where does clinical waste go?

    Due to its infectious nature, clinical waste will be taken to a specialist waste disposal facility for treatment or incineration. It will typically go to an energy-from-waste (EfW) facility, also known as a waste-to-energy (WTE) plant, which processes waste materials to generate energy in the form of electricity, heat, or fuel.

Here's a closer look at some of the different types of clinical waste and why they are hazardous:

    • Chemical Waste: This category includes discarded chemicals from laboratories, pharmaceuticals, and cleaning agents. Chemical waste can be corrosive, flammable, or toxic, and improper disposal can lead to environmental contamination or chemical reactions that are harmful to humans and wildlife.
    • Pharmaceutically Contaminated Waste: This waste includes expired or unused medications and other pharmaceutical products. It can contain potent drugs that might be harmful if ingested or come into contact with humans or animals.
    • Radioactive Waste: Produced from medical treatments and diagnostic procedures involving radioactive materials, this waste is dangerous due to its radiation. Exposure to radioactive waste can cause severe health effects, including cancer.
    • Infectious Waste: This type includes any waste potentially contaminated with pathogens, such as blood-soaked materials, cultures, and swabs. Infectious waste poses a risk of spreading infections and diseases.

  • Where should clinical waste be stored?

    Once filled to three-quarters full, your clinical waste bag or rigid containers should be stored in a designated locked room or cupboard out of the way of all patients, customers, and staff who enter your practice.
    If your clinical waste is stored outside, we supply lockable external wheelie bins to keep your waste safe and secure from rodents and other pests.

  • Where should you dispose of your clinical waste?

    Depending on the type of clinical waste, it should be disposed of in UN approved containers which are colour-coded in accordance with NHS guidelines.

    Soft waste such as contaminated swabs, dressings, wipes and PPE can be disposed of in clinical waste bags housed in a clinical waste bin.

    Sharps including needles, syringes, blades, and any other items that could puncture the skin need to be disposed of in dedicated sharps bins ideally situated at the point of use to reduce the risk of an accidental sharp injury.

    Pharmaceutical waste, such as out of date medicines should be disposed of in their original packaging into a rigid container. Liquid pharmaceutical waste should however be disposed of into solid rigid containers with a hermetic seal to prevent liquid spillages.

    Laboratory waste, such as petri dishes, glass waste and vials which may contain some liquid residue can be disposed of in our specialist Griff Pac rigid containers.

    Anatomical waste such as human and animal tissue and body parts should be disposed of into a red lidded rigid container.
