Sustainability

How are we helping our environment?

At Initial, operating sustainably is a central part of our business model. In everything we do, we aim to mitigate our environmental impact.

Awards in Sustainability

We are included in the Euronext Vigeo United Kingdom 20 as one of the top 20 UK companies for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance.

We are also included on the ESI Excellence Global index, which requires a focus on the environment, community involvement and good business behaviour.

Below are some examples of the work we are doing to build a truly sustainable product and service.

Mats

Both our fixed and loose lay mat ranges have strong environmental credentials.

Soap

Our new soap range has been awarded both the Nordic Swan and EU Ecolabel accreditations. These two certifications mean that our soaps:

  • Don’t contain microplastics
  • Come in recyclable packaging
  • Have a smaller carbon footprint

Dental Recycling Facility

Initial Medical’s dental recycling facility follows a number of innovative initiatives to ensure a more sustainable approach.

The facility is recognised for its efforts in sustainable separation and reprocessing of plastic waste. In 2019, it received the 'Certification of the German Institute for Sustainability and Economy' after a full sustainability audit, closely followed by the 'Certification of SmartWay' for its efforts to recycle separated plastic waste.

The environment comes first – below are some examples of how the facility is practising more sustainably.

  • Carbon emissions reduction - The facility is continuously improving the productivity of each separation process and has been reducing it's carbon dioxide output, saving 350kg of CO2 in 2019 and 2020.

  • Water reduction - The facility uses as little water as possible during the process by reprocessing used water and feeding the water back into the flushing cycle.

  • Utilising renewable technologies - The facility is heated and cooled by a heating pump that requires no fossil fuels and creates no carbon emissions. This is supported by solar energy gathered from a photovoltaic system installed at the facility.

  • Planting trees - Not only does the facility work on optimising the sustainability of its reprocessing, for every separation process, the facility plants two trees in local forest to offset its carbon emissions.

  • Mercury emissions reduction - The facility is a part of the European Union project to reduce mercury emissions as a result of the use of dental amalgam.
