Instead, always use the designated containers provided which should be filled no more than three-quarters full before sealing. Gypsum contains high levels of sulphate, which, when combined with biodegradable waste, can produce hazardous and foul-smelling hydrogen sulphide gas. Due to this, gypsum is prohibited from being disposed of in normal landfill. It must be handled in a manner suitable for high sulphate waste to prevent the release of toxic gases.
