Urinal Management Solutions

At Initial Washroom Hygiene, we believe that one poorly maintained urinal can make an entire washroom feel dirty. Effective urinal management quietly shapes how clean and comfortable a washroom feels to the user.

People judge a washroom in the first few seconds of entering, with smell being a key part of that first impression. An effective urinal management solution, alongside regular flushing and cleaning of urinal pipework, reduces bad odours. These steps also help to prevent clogs, damage, and wear and tear, potentially saving business owners money and avoiding washrooms being out of use at peak times.

What is Urinal Management?

An effective urinal management solution incorporates chemical, biological and physical methods to destroy bacteria and break down uric scale from pipework, leaving the urinal free-flowing and smelling its best. By automating this process, the urinal is maintained 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, reducing the need for cleaning multiple times a day. A modern urinal management system should also feature water saving technology to benefit the environment and reduce costs.

The Problems Associated with Not Having Water Management Solutions

Several problems can occur if a site does not have water management devices installed, including:

  • Increased Water Consumption: Without the necessary water control systems in place, your urinals may flush constantly and in most cases excessively, which can lead to higher water usage, therefore increasing utility costs.
  • Blockages: A lack of proactive cistern management may lead to blockages and clogs within the urinal system.
  • Environmental Impact: With the potential for excessive water usage, this may increase a business’s environmental footprint over time.
  • Odour Issues: Odour problems are inevitable and can escalate fast. These problems include bacterial growth, high urine concentration, scale and biofilm build-up. If left unaddressed, this can result in costly repairs and replacement, or require more frequent deep cleaning and over-reliance on harmful chemicals

Compliance with Water Regulations

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require that businesses control the amount of water they use. Installing our water management device will keep you compliant.

  • Flushing cisterns serving a single bowl/slab are required to flush no more than 10 litres of water per hour.
  • Flushing cisterns serving multiple bowls/slabs are required to flush no more than 7.5 litres of water per hour.
  • The urinal control must be designed to ensure that the urinal/cistern(s) do not fill and flush during periods when the building is not in occupancy or in use.

Don't Forget About Your Cisterns!

Regular cistern cleaning can be tricky, but not doing so will result in foul-smelling urinals and toilets in most washrooms. Our Dual Sanitiser helps by providing “a brush with every flush” automatically cleaning from the cistern to the pipes as the liquid travels through the pipework.

Both the Signature and Reflection dual sanitisers provide a dose of fluid at set intervals.  This provides ongoing protection against the build-up of uric scale and bacteria, helping tackle the root causes of odour issues associated with cistern cleaning.

  • Can be positioned out of sight
  • Dose Eco-Clear fluid on a customised timer to ensure consistent cleaning
  • Use in conjunction with a Washroom Deep Clean will help to remove any limescale build-up
  • Functions as both a urinal and toilet (WC) sanitiser

Dual Toilet Sanitisers

Our Dual Sanitiser comes in two distinct designs:

  • Signature Range - Which comes in two different colours, White or Silver
  • Reflection Range - Which comes in a Stainless Steel finish

The Evolution of the Male Washroom

Our research* indicates that 56% of male respondents are put off using public washrooms because of bad odours, and 60% if they appear dirty.
We understand the challenges in men’s washrooms and the importance of providing a positive experience. Unpleasant odours, unhygienic urinals and a lack of discreet options for the disposal of male incontinence products are just a few of the common issues that can negatively impact repeat visits. 75% of males surveyed said that the overall quality of their experience of a washroom influences how much they would be willing to spend with a business.*

Urinal Management Solutions FAQs

  • What is the best way to clean a urinal?

The best way to clean a urinal is to use a suitable cleaner to remove stains, ensuring that the required dwell time (the time a product should be left in contact with a surface to work correctly) is met. Once the required dwell time has passed, use a cloth or pad to remove the stains from the urinal.

  • How to maintain urinals?

Urinal cleaning can be a grim task. The best way to maintain a urinal is to implement a rigorous cleaning schedule of all areas of the urinal on a daily basis. Practically speaking, that isn't always possible, so employing the services of a washroom cleaning expert like Initial Washroom Hygiene helps ensure bad smells and blocked pipes are a thing of the past.

  • How does an automatic urinal flusher work?

Utilises Infrared (IR) technology to detect a user's presence or movement. When a user moves away, the sensor signals the battery or AC Solenoid to the open position, releasing water into the system for a preset amount of time. Using an automatic flusher minimises water usage compared to manual flushing systems.

  • How to get rid of urine smell in men's toilets?

You need to remove the smell at its original source and not just mask it with an air freshener. Removing scale and destroying bacteria build-up in the pipework will eliminate the smell of urine in the washroom. Clean all areas of the washroom, and not just the urinal itself. Maintaining a proper and consistent water flow is essential here.

  • How to stop urinals from blocking?

To stop urinals from blocking in the first place, it is vital to prevent build-up before it becomes clogged. To do this:

    1. Ensure adequate water flow
    2. Control the build-up of uric scale
    3. Prevent any debris from entering the pipework (i.e. chewing gum, paper, etc.)
    4. Inspect and clean pipework regularly and replace any damaged or heavily scaled pipework when needed.

  • Why do urinals get clogged?

Urinals clog up for a variety of reasons:

    1. Uric Scale Build-up (#1 cause) - Over time, the build-up of scale can narrow pipe diameter, cause bacteria in the pipework to become trapped, and create rough surfaces within the pipework for debris to become caught.
    2. Poor flushing/Water Flow - With poorly installed or managed systems, not enough water is pushed through the system, enabling residue to settle in the pipework instead of clearing it. This can lead to an acceleration of the build-up of scale.
    3. Biofilm and Bacterial Growth - Bacteria form a slimy biofilm on the pipework wall which can lead to uric crystals being trapped, producing odours in the pipework, and over time reducing the flow of water through the pipework.

  • Should men's toilets have sanitary bins?

Absolutely! Whilst it is not yet mandatory for male washrooms to have bins (unlike female washrooms), every male washroom should provide a means for users to dispose of incontinence products in a discreet and dignified manner.

  • Do you offer Waste units for male incontinence products?

Yes, we offer our new Signature Inclusive Sanitary Bin for the disposal of all male incontinence products.
