Safer Washrooms and Hygienic Buildings

Everyone must adjust their behaviour in the post Coronavirus world and adhere to new government guidance on preventing the transmission of viruses in public spaces. As germs can easily spread through communal areas, maintaining high hygiene standards throughout your building is absolutely crucial.

Creating hygienic buildings with clean air, healthy hands and hygienic cubicles matters as businesses begin to reopen. People are now more aware of the importance of reducing the transmission of viruses and germs. We have been the experts in hygiene for 120 years; our range of products, such as soapshand sanitiser dispensers, hand dryers, floor mats and VIRUSKILLER™ Air Purifiers, help to prevent cross contamination occurring and give you peace of mind.

We have used our expertise to develop specific virtual surveys which will ensure that we can identify the right hygiene facilities for you without us having to physically visit your premises. Get in touch to organise your survey.

Why are washrooms a high risk area?

In the washroom, germs can be transmitted directly, indirectly or through the air, making it crucial to minimise their spread.

  • The one place everybody visits - All colleagues and many visitors will use the washroom during the day.
  • The one place with a bit of privacy - Where would you go to cough or sneeze.
  • Relaying on other people's behaviour - Did the person before you wash their hands? What did the person before you touch?
  • Surfaces that are ideal for Coronavirus - Coronavirus survives well on hard smooth surfaces.

The hygienic cubicle

Reduce the risk of cross contamination and reassure users

  • The previous user might have sneezed or coughed
  • Germs could be present on all surfaces
  • The cubicle contains hard and smooth surfaces where Coronavirus survives well
  • You share this area with the people who have used it before you
  • There are multiple shared contact points - door handles, wc handle, wc lid, toilet tissue

Government guidelines

Set clear use and cleaning guidance for toilets to ensure they are kept clean

Healthy hands

In light of the ongoing Coronavirus situation, proper hand hygiene has never been more important.

  • Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water
  • Be wary of manually operated taps as these are communal touchpoints
    - Avoid touching these with bare hands if you can
  • Suitable hand drying should be available at all times
    - Paper towels - in a dispenser to avoid contamination
    - Paper waste bin - should have a lid and be frequently emptied
    - Hand dryers: with HEPA filter to clean the air used for hand drying
  • Ensure that systems for maintaining social distancing are in place
    - Are there enough dispensers and dryers?

1. Handwash

Reassure users that hand hygiene standards and distancing are maintained

  • Users need to be confident that there is a high copacity, wall mounted soap dispenser available in every washroom
  • Our soaps can be fixed at two metre distances - standard pump bottles cannot
  • One litre soaps mean less labour than 250ml pump bottles, keeping the washroom clear for safely distanced use

Government guidelines

In every workplace, increasing the frequency of handwashing

2. Hand Drying

Remove touchpoints, reduce cross contamination, provide proper hygiene facilities and enforce social distancing

  • The science of HEPA dryers - government guidelines recommend towels or hand dryers, but HEPA filters provide an extra level of reassurance
  • Adequate number of units to space people out - if there is only one dryer or towels then queueing will be necessary
  • Paper hand towels are an effective and hygienic means of hand drying, but they create a large amount of waste that must be constantly managed.
  • Proper dryers/towels will ensure that people don't leave the washroom with wet hands

Government guidelines

Providing hand drying facilities - either paper towels or electrical dryers

3. Hand Sanitiser

To ensure washrooms can provide proper hygiene standards

  • The vital third step of hand hygiene
  • Provides ongoing hand protection for people after they have finished washing and drying their hands
  • Ensures that any germs left after hand washing are dealt with

Government guidelines

Providing hand washing facilities or hand sanitiser where not possible
