We’ve been told that women are from Venus and men are from Mars, or at least we were told that in 1992 when the book of the same name was released. But times have changed since then – and it’s prompted a revolution in washrooms.
There used to be a simple dichotomy in gendered washrooms.
Men made do with grotty, grimy toilets and sinks – long metal urinals resembling pig troughs were surrounded by yellowing tiles, while sinks looked about as hygienic as a skip.
Women’s toilets were far neater affairs, regularly cleaned and kept in top hygienic condition.
A shift in priorities
However, according to the European Cleaning Journal, expectations of washrooms for men and women have shifted dramatically.
Citing a 70 per cent increase in the purchase of male grooming products, the journal claims that there is anecdotal evidence of moderns men preferring a cleaner washroom than in previous generations.
Washroom expert Dr Georg Steiner agrees with the statistics. “We have carried out studies that show women to be more sensitive and have higher expectations of washroom standards than men, but there is only a difference of a few per cent,” he said.
“In some washrooms the air freshener fragrance differs from the ladies to the gents but we provide the same soaps, hand towels, toilet paper, air fresheners, hand creams and hand disinfection for the washrooms of both sexes.”
