Accessible Washrooms: More Than Just a Sign

Accessible Washrooms & Why They Matter

An accessible washroom (also known as a disabled toilet or an accessible toilet), is a washroom space designed to accommodate people with disabilities including those who use wheelchairs or have mobility impairments as well as those who may have a hidden disability or long term health condition.

People with disabilities (visible or hidden) often face a wide variety of challenges when using toilets away from their home setting, whether this is due to poor accessibility, or a lack of provision of the specific facilities they need. Accessible washrooms cater to those with disabilities through correct location, signage, and safety precautions, and are vital to create an inclusive and safe environment for all.

An accessible washroom will include features such as extra space for manoeuvrability, grab bars, an alarm cord and accessible fixtures. It will also contain a wash hand basin and hand drying solution, all within the same space.

Are Accessible Washrooms Legally Required?

Businesses open to the public, like shops and restaurants, and buildings with employees are generally required to provide an accessible toilet. Legally, there is a requirement in the UK to provide accessible washrooms in certain types of buildings. The Equality Act 2010 and Building Regulations (specifically Document M) mandate this, particularly in commercial and public buildings.

The Shocking Reality Faced by Accessible Washroom Users in the UK

It’s sad to imagine a situation whereby you don’t feel confident to leave your home and enjoy public venues and spaces due to being worried about whether you will find access to the toilet facilities you need, when you need them.  Sadly, it appears this is an experience for many.

We recently commissioned a survey* of 500 individuals across the UK who have had to use an accessible washroom due to a long-term health condition, impairment, or disability.

The results of this survey were eye-opening.  They showed that all too often, individuals with hidden disabilities are made to feel unwelcome or scrutinised when trying to use accessible washrooms. They highlighted a stark reality, that people with invisible conditions, from chronic pain to mental health challenges, rely on these facilities just as much as those with visible mobility issues.

#DignityforAll: The Important Role of Proper Signage

Everyone deserves a dignified washroom experience, and by introducing more inclusive signage, you can help ensure that accessible washrooms are recognised for what they truly are: spaces for everyone. While the traditional wheelchair user icon is widely recognised it perhaps provides the impression that the washroom behind that door is only to be used by people with a visible disability.

Many signs don’t fully advertise who these areas are for: as the survey showed, 37% of people with hidden disabilities have been challenged when using an accessible washroom, with 49% told they don’t look disabled enough.

We believe that it’s crucial that public spaces and businesses adopt clearer signage to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and make sure that all individuals, regardless of the visibility of their disability or long-term health condition, can access the facilities they need without fear of judgement or discomfort.

Simple ways to improve accessible washrooms include:

✓ Better use of signs – to help educate and demonstrate that the accessible washroom is for users who may have hidden as opposed to hidden disabilities or long-term health conditions.
✓ Providing appropriate waste disposal options – to allow for the easy disposal of incontinence, period and other sanitary waste at the point of need.
✓ Keeping dispensers well stocked – it is vital that essential hygiene provisions such as toilet roll, soap dispensers and soap sanitisers are not allowed to run out, leaving the washroom user in an awkward situation.
✓ Providing a working and accessible alarm cord – it is vital that emergency cords are kept in working order and are located within easy reach, so accessible washroom users can alert others if they need help.
