Does Your Toilet Roll Reveal Your Personality? The Great Unwinding Debate

Toilet paper, invented by Joseph Gayetty and first marketed in 1857, is a washroom essential we often take for granted. But did you know that the way we place it on the holder can spark a surprisingly passionate debate? It seems the direction we unroll our toilet paper might even say something about our personality!

The Never-Ending Toilet Paper Orientation Discussion

It might seem trivial, but the orientation of the toilet roll is a topic many people feel strongly about. Modern engineering has given us various ways to dispense toilet paper, but ultimately, the choice of which way it faces is left to the user. Factors influencing this choice include ease and speed of use, hygiene, aesthetics, convenience, and minimising waste. Interestingly, studies show that around half of us actively think about which way the toilet paper goes, and a fifth will even turn it around if they find it “the wrong way”.

The “Over” Team: Unrolling From the Top

Unrolling from the top (or “over”) is the most popular method in the UK. Many people find it easier to tear off sheets this way. It also minimises the risk of the toilet paper touching the wall, which can help maintain hygiene. Plus, it’s arguably easier to find the end of the roll. According to research by Dr. Gilda Carle, those who prefer this method tend to be organised and appreciate order.

The “Under” Team: Unrolling From the Bottom

A smaller group prefers unrolling from the bottom (“under”). They argue that this method helps prevent accidental unrolling – less chance of the cat or a toddler creating a paper trail! It can also keep the paper cleaner, as it’s less likely to brush against the wall. Dr. Carle’s research suggests that people who prefer this method are often more relaxed, sociable, and good at building relationships.

The “Don’t Mind” Crew: Flexibility Reigns

Of course, many people simply don’t have a preference! They’re happy with any dispenser and any orientation. Dr. Carle’s studies indicate that these individuals are typically flexible, avoid conflict, and are open to new experiences and adventures.

Hygiene is Always the Priority
