Global Handwashing Day - Journey of the Germ

Global Hand Washing Day (GHWD) is celebrated annually on 15th October. Originally created to recognise the importance of hand washing and promote effective hygiene practices, GHWD’s now supported by over 200 million people globally.

Traditionally, GHWD initiatives focus on combatting diseases more prevalent in the developing world, such as diarrhoea. Washing hands with soap is the most effective and least costly method of combating this.

The promotion of correct hand washing techniques is essential to achieving the World Health Organisation’s Millennium Development Goal of reducing deaths among children under the age of five. It is predicted that if more people used soap to wash their hands before eating, then it could save more lives than any single vaccine or medical intervention – as it would reduce deaths caused by diarrhoea by over 50%.
