While many of us consider seasonal sniffles unavoidable, it’s good to keep in mind that prevention is much better than having to fight off illness later.

The annual flu vaccine remains a key part of our defence, but it shouldn’t be our only measure. The real foundation for helping yourself and others to stay healthy over the winter season is good hygiene, particularly by practising regular handwashing, and following treatment guidelines if you do become ill.

By combining trusted medical advice with everyday hygiene habits, you can create a strong shield to keep seasonal illnesses at bay and help prevent them from spreading to others.

1. Get vaccinated early

The UK vaccination programme prioritises groups most at risk of severe illness from flu and those who contribute most to community transmission. The vaccination programme usually starts in September, targeting:

over 65s

pregnant women

people in care homes

carers

people with certain long-term medical conditions

frontline staff in health and social care

children aged from 2 to 16

It is important to get vaccinated as early as possible to ensure your immune system develops resistance, especially in years when the flu season starts earlier than usual, such as in 2025.

Why a flu vaccine is needed every year

A flu vaccine needs to be administered annually because the flu virus constantly mutates and changes its surface proteins, which means our immune system may not recognise the virus even after having previous vaccines.

Experts from around the world meet every February to try to forecast which strains will be prevalent in the coming winter, and advise on which strains of the virus to produce a vaccine for. The traditional process involves cultivating the virus in millions of eggs, which takes six months. It is hoped that new vaccine technology, which can produce vaccines more quickly, will soon be available.

Why employers should consider giving employees the flu vaccine

Workplace vaccination programmes can provide significant benefits as employees can be infected and spread the virus in office buildings before experiencing any symptoms. Vaccinating staff can reduce the likelihood of a single infected individual causing a widespread outbreak that could lead to many lost work days. The vaccine can also reduce the severity of a flu infection and lead to fewer workdays lost

2. Handwashing and good hygiene

Washing your hands with soap and water is still one of the most effective ways to minimise the risk of spreading the flu virus and other seasonal illnesses.

Good hand hygiene practices

Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for 20-30 seconds. This isn’t just about cleaning your hands; the soap molecules physically pull apart the fatty outer layer of the flu virus, effectively deactivating it.

If soap is not available, use an alcohol-based hand gel.

For coughs and sneezes, practice the “Catch it, Bin it, Kill it” mantra:

Catch it: Use a tissue for every cough and sneeze. If you don’t have one, cough or sneeze into your elbow, NOT your hands, which will then contaminate everything you touch.

Bin it: Dispose of tissues immediately; a used tissue is a virus and bacteria reservoir.

Kill it: Wash your hands with soap and water.

General hygiene practices

Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces, particularly touchpoints that are used by many people, such as door handles, light switches, and kitchen counters.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, particularly after coming into contact with communal touchpoints. If you do need to touch your face, be sure to wash your hands.

Don’t share items such as towels, toys, cutlery, cups, plates and kitchen utensils.

Cleaning the air using ventilation and air purifiers

Flu is a respiratory virus that is transmitted person-to-person mainly through respiratory droplets from coughs, sneezes, and even talking, which are inhaled by others or land on surfaces, and are then transferred via touching your mouth, nose, or eyes. It is worth noting that the virus can survive on surfaces for up to 24 hours.

Cleaning the air of infectious particles is especially important in places with many people in close proximity, such as offices, shops, schools, hospitals and care homes. This can be done by:

Refreshing the air: This reduces the concentration of virus particles in a room and can be done by HVAC systems if present, or by opening windows for 10 minutes every hour.

Cleaning the air: HVAC systems can have suitable filters fitted, or portable air cleaners with HEPA 13 filters can remove over 99% of viral aerosols from the air, but the number needed depends on their air-flow capacity and the room volume.

Wearing a mask: For those people who are particularly susceptible, you could consider additional measures and choose to wear a close-fitting FFP2/N95 or FFP3 mask. These masks are designed to ensure that most of the inhaled and exhaled air passes through the high-efficiency filter material, providing considerably better protection than the blue surgical masks.

The role of businesses in flu prevention

Businesses have a crucial role in preventing infections among employees by providing a hygienic environment. This includes maintaining surface hygiene throughout the business and providing clean, hygienic and well-maintained washroom facilities.

Initial provides professional hygiene services for businesses, offering a comprehensive suite of washroom and hand hygiene solutions designed to minimise cross contamination. These include a full range of No Touch soap and sanitiser dispensers, high-speed hand drying solutions and specialised cubicle services, including sanitary waste disposal and seat sanitisers.

3. How to treat flu if you become ill

Treatment refers to what to do if a person already has flu. A vaccine would be useless at this stage because it aims to build immunity before infection occurs, making it ineffective.

Stay at home

If you succumb to flu, the core advice remains the “24-hour fever rule”: stay at home until you have been fever-free for a full day without the help of paracetamol. This ensures you have passed the most contagious phase of viral shedding and are less likely to spread it to others.

Practice basic self-care

Most people need no medical treatment and will recover within a week. The UK NHS recommends that people without other serious medical conditions:

Take plenty of rest to help your body recover.

Keep yourself warm.

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Take paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and relieve aches.

3. Take antiviral medicine if prescribed

GPs can now prescribe antivirals such as Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) throughout the year for at-risk groups without waiting for national “flu alerts”. These medicines prevent the virus from replicating and, importantly, decrease the amount of virus released into the air, making you less infectious to others.

4. Why are antibiotics ineffective against flu?

Antibiotics are ineffective against flu or other viral infections because they only target bacteria. Using antibiotics unnecessarily increases the risk of bacteria developing resistance, such as MRSA, which causes problems in hospitals worldwide. Only take antibiotics if a doctor prescribes them for bacterial infections you have at the same time.

4.
