These help staff implement safe routines in the care home, and provide support if a team member has questions for any waste procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/B2159iii-health-technical-memorandum-07-01.pdf\">Health Technical Memorandum 07-01: Safe and sustainable management of healthcare waste<\/a> \u2013 this NHS guidance tells care homes how to operate a colour-coded waste system, and manage risks from various items. It also provides insight on environmentally friendly disposal workflows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/simpler-recycling-workplace-recycling-in-england\">Simpler recycling: workplace recycling in England<\/a> \u2013&nbsp;this new regulation means all businesses with more than 10 full-time equivalent employees must separate municipal waste into general waste, dry mixed recycling waste (paper and cardboard, plastic, metal, glass) and food waste. From 31 March 2027, all other firms must comply.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/pubns\/hsis7.pdf\">Health and Safety (Sharp Instruments in Healthcare) Regulations 2013<\/a> \u2013 this ensures that sharp instruments like needles are managed carefully to avoid injury. This regulation covers every aspect from use, to the disposal of a medical sharp.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Care Quality Commission (CQC) regularly assesses care homes to ensure they are operating at high standards. They also provide key information for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cqc.org.uk\/guidance-regulation\/providers\/adult-social-care\">adult social care settings on their website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nursing home staff will need to be aware of other key regulations, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/1990\/43\/contents\">Environmental Protection Act 1990<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/uksi\/2005\/894\/contents\">Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Segregating care home waste<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Waste items from care homes need to be separated according to the hazards they present. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/B2159iii-health-technical-memorandum-07-01.pdf\">HTM 07-01<\/a> features the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/medical\/colour-coding-guide\/\">waste colour code<\/a>, which must be followed for all waste generated. It is organised as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Yellow \u2013 infectious waste with another hazard (for example, chemical contamination)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orange \u2013 infectious waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Purple \u2013 cytotoxic and cytostatic waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yellow and black (tiger stripe) \u2013 offensive\/hygiene waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red \u2013 anatomical waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blue \u2013 medicinal waste (including controlled drugs denaturing kits)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White with amalgam markings \u2013 amalgam waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White with gypsum markings \u2013 gypsum waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yellow with radioactive symbol \u2013 radioactive waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Black \u2013 municipal waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White\/clear \u2013 recycling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each item of waste will fit into one of these categories, which will be separated even further depending on whether the item is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/medical\/sharps-disposal\/\">sharp<\/a>, solid or liquid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These will have their own dedicated waste containers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/medical\/sharps-disposal\/bins\/\">Sharps containers<\/a> will be strong enough to avoid punctures, and liquid bins need to be leak-proof. Most solid items count as soft waste, such as PPE, so can be placed in waste bags (which are easier to pack away and store).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/medical\/colour-coding-guide\/\">Colour-coded posters<\/a> at disposal points can be a simple and effective reminder for staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to store care home waste&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Safe storage of waste items is key. It protects staff and residents in the care home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All waste bags should be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infectionpreventioncontrol.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/CH-18-Safe-disposal-of-waste-July-2020-Version-2.00.pdf\">no more than \u00be full and no more than 4kg in weight.<\/a> Clinical bagged waste should be kept in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/healthcare-waste-appropriate-measures-for-permitted-facilities\/waste-storage-segregation-and-handling-appropriate-measures\">fully enclosed, lockable, rigid, leak-proof and weather-proof bulk containers<\/a>.
