On the 5<sup>th<\/sup> May, the dental associations posted \u2018hand hygiene supports safe dental care\u2019 on their various social media sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An important message<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Support from leading dental bodies has bolstered efforts from the World Health Organisation (WHO), which has claimed that dentists can play an important part in changing attitudes towards effective hand hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The social media posts followed news that more than four million patients are affected by healthcare-acquired infections every year in Europe, costing around \u00a35.5 billion in additional healthcare and direct financial losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Checking your hands<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Mick Horton, FGDP(UK) dean, and Dr Melanie Wilson, chair of ACOM, said, \u201cDental patients are in your hands, so always check what\u2019s on your hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t spread infections, but do spread the word \u2013 sign up to our Thunderclap today, then share the link with your colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a positive move when it comes to raising awareness about a subject many people choose to ignore.
