These are especially prevalent once a sharp has been used, and needs to be disposed of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding which items should be designated for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/medical\/sharps-disposal\/\">sharps disposal<\/a> and how to do this safely is essential in helping to prevent injuries to healthcare professionals, patients, and the wider community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is a medical sharp?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/uksi\/2013\/645\/made\">A medical sharp is an object or instrument that is necessary for healthcare activities, and can cut, prick, or cause a similar injury.<\/a> This could include anything from needles and lancets to scissors and surgical blades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other sharp items, such as broken glass, may be present in a healthcare environment. These must equally be treated in the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are unsure whether an item qualifies as sharps waste, you should always treat it as such to minimise the risk of injury to yourself and others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/385300\/EoN_2014_-_FINAL_CT_3_sig_occ.pdf\">Public Health England<\/a> review found that percutaneous injuries made up 71% of healthcare associated occupational exposures to body fluid in the assessed period, and 81% of such injuries were sustained by doctors, nurses, and healthcare assistants. Secure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/medical\/sharps-disposal\/bins\/\">sharps waste containers <\/a>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cqc.org.uk\/guidance-providers\/dentists\/dental-mythbuster-7-use-safer-sharps\">relevant instructions<\/a> for their use must be close to the work area, but not sited on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective containers are designed to prevent punctures caused by sharps waste. Place items into a sharps bin immediately after use, and do not try to remove them again. Sharps containers should be locked when they become three-quarters full, and you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/biosafety\/blood-borne-viruses\/avoiding-sharps-injuries.htm\">shouldn\u2019t try to compress the sharps waste contents<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most prevalent and commonly used medical sharps is a needle. T<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/uksi\/2013\/645\/made\">he recapping of needles should be prevented before disposal<\/a>. This is because the process of recapping often creates a higher risk of injury, especially when performed with two hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/uksi\/2013\/645\/made\">recapping needles is necessary to prevent a greater risk of harm<\/a>, the chance of injury to the healthcare professional must be reduced. This could be with the use of a suitable appliance or tool to aid the process,<sup> <\/sup>before it is immediately discarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Follow the colour code<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As with all other waste products in healthcare environments, you must identify what regulations apply to sharps disposal.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/B2159iii-health-technical-memorandum-07-01.pdf\">The Health Technical Memorandum 07-01 (HTM 07-01) <\/a>provides a complete insight into the best practice colour coding needed in your working environment, dependent on the care you provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a brief guide, the colour coding for sharps is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Orange \u2013 a sharp that is NOT medicinally contaminated (such as a sharp instrument used during a surgical operation or a needle used in acupuncture).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yellow \u2013 a sharp that is medicinally contaminated, however not by a cytotoxic\/cytostatic product, and may or may not be contaminated by an infectious pathogen (such as a needle used to give an injection).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Purple \u2013 a sharp that is medicinally contaminated by a cytotoxic\/cytostatic product (such as a needle used to provide botulinum toxin injections).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yellow, with a trefoil symbol and the word \u201cRadioactive\u201d \u2013 a sharp that is radioactive (such as a needle used in radiation therapy).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharps that are non-hazardous and uncontaminated, perhaps because they are unused, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/biosafety\/blood-borne-viruses\/avoiding-sharps-injuries.htm\">must be disposed of safely in an orange sharps container<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/follow-the-colour-code-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Follow the colour code\" class=\"wp-image-3584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/follow-the-colour-code-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/follow-the-colour-code-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/follow-the-colour-code-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/follow-the-colour-code.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Help to minimise the risk of injury with a dedicated sharps disposal service<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to safe disposal workflows is having dedicated and effective sharps waste containers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Initial Medical we provide sustainably made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/medical\/sharps-disposal\/bins\/\">sharps bins<\/a>, colour-coded to ensure you are compliant with your waste separation responsibilities.
