A lack of handwashing facilities or awareness programmes puts individuals at risk of harmful diseases; but poor handwashing isn\u2019t only a problem for developing countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite an increase in flexible working, the majority of people spend most of their time in the workplace. These large communal spaces are a potential hotbed of germs and illnesses. Our survey suggests that handwashing is rarely exercised as often as it should. Consider these three stats:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>33% of respondents use a smartphone while in a washroom at work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>12% take food or drink into the washroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>37% don\u2019t wash their hands if they are in a rush.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though 84% of office workers claim to wash their hands after visiting the bathroom, another of our studies suggests it\u2019s only actually half of that. Now take into account the 32% of people who sometimes or always hot-desk and those 49% who eat at their desks &#8211; the potential for germs to spread is high.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"408\" src=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/initial-1024x408-blogimage1-EatAtDesk-GHD-230819.png\" alt=\"49% of office workers eat at their desk\" class=\"wp-image-1315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/initial-1024x408-blogimage1-EatAtDesk-GHD-230819.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/initial-1024x408-blogimage1-EatAtDesk-GHD-230819-300x120.png 300w, https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/initial-1024x408-blogimage1-EatAtDesk-GHD-230819-768x306.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>One of our survey\u2019s respondents summed it up perfectly when she said: \u201cThe thing I hate most about office toilets is people who don\u2019t wash their hands after using the toilet. I have to try and get out without touching door handles. It defeats the point of me washing my own hands\u201d. Her opinion is reciprocated across the survey. In fact, 42% of respondents avoid shaking hands with someone who\u2019s just used the washroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Could employers do more for staff? With reasons for not washing hands ranging from a lack of provisions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/washroom\/hand-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soap<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/washroom\/hand-drying\/roller-towel-dispensers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">towels<\/a> (20%) to avoiding queues for the sink or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/washroom\/hand-drying\/hand-dryers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hand dryer<\/a> (14%), being discouraged by a bad smell (16%) or an unclean handwashing area (15%), there\u2019s clearly a strong case for action. While it can be argued that the responsibility for clean hands lies with the individual, satisfactory washroom conditions and educating people about efficient hand hygiene can play an important part in promoting positive action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hand hygiene tips for the workplace<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Germs like to get around, but there\u2019s plenty businesses can do to prevent them from doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Encourage employees to practise good hand hygiene. Washing hands regularly and thoroughly helps to reduce and remove potentially harmful bacteria and viruses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simple initiatives like reminders near sinks and basins that encourage workers to wash, dry, and sanitise their hands, while discouraging the use of smartphones in the washroom, can make a difference. A smartphone taken into the washroom will invariably end up with germs and bacteria on it. People who pick up their phone after washing their hands are immediately undoing their good work and could be placing themselves and their colleagues needlessly at risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In washrooms, investing in the correct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/washroom\/aircare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">air care solutions<\/a> will help neutralise bad odours and intelligently fragrance the air throughout the washroom, while installing no touch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/washroom\/hand-care\/hand-sanitiser-dispensers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soap dispensers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/washroom\/hand-care\/hand-sanitiser-dispensers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sanitisers<\/a> too, which help to promote hand hygiene by eliminating the need for contact and \u2013 subsequently \u2013 the spread of germs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It isn\u2019t long before clean hands come into contact with contaminated surfaces. Antibacterial hygienic door handles can provide a barrier between clean hands and dirty door handles, preventing cross contamination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/washroom\/hand-care\/hand-sanitiser-dispensers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hand sanitisers<\/a> to combat spreading should also be available around the office. The most effective sanitisers are those that are not alcohol-based and form a gentle, long-lasting protective barrier around hands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Businesses should ensure regular, thorough cleaning takes place in communal office areas, such as the kitchen. Table tops and store shelves should be cleaned regularly using anti-bacterial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/washroom\/hand-care\/hand-and-surface-sanitiser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surface wipes<\/a>. It\u2019s recommended that companies undertake a professional deep clean at least twice a year to prevent the build-up of hidden dirt.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, if an employee contracts a virus such as Norovirus \u2013 a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea \u2013 make sure they stay away from your premises for at least 48 hours after the symptoms have disappeared, to avoid wider contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A clean commercial washroom equals clean hands for all<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our study showed that 61% of office workers want cleaner washroom facilities at their place of business.
