This lack of access to sanitary products, safe and hygienic spaces to use them, and the right to manage menstruation without shame or stigma can have severe repercussions. According to the charity Plan International UK, one in ten girls in the UK cannot afford menstrual products, and the impact is similarly severe worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Period poverty is driven by several factors:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Economic inequality<\/strong>: Many women and girls cannot afford to purchase menstrual products (<a href=\"https:\/\/wiisglobal.org\/period-poverty-a-global-crisis\/\">WIIS<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural stigma: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/girlshelpinggirlsperiod.org\/what-causes-period-poverty\/\">Societal taboos and misinformation<\/a> about menstruation can often make women and girls feel ashamed and isolated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lack of education: <\/strong>Without proper knowledge about menstrual health and hygiene, women and girls can end up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/period-poverty\">poor menstrual practices and serious health issues.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:17px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The impacts are far-reaching:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:57% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.initial.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/DALL\u00b7E-2024-05-28-08.45.39-An-image-depicting-the-impact-of-period-poverty-with-a-young-girl-sitting-sadly-outside-a-school-unable-to-attend-due-to-lack-of-menstrual-products.-.webp\" alt=\"An image depicting the impact of period poverty with a young girl sitting sadly outside a school, unable to attend due to lack of menstrual products. \" class=\"wp-image-3479 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Girls may miss school during their periods, leading to gaps in education and lower academic performance, as well as impacting their social wellbeing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improper menstrual hygiene, along with the use of inadequate menstrual products can cause infections and other health issues, such as urinary tract infections and bacterial vaginosis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women may miss work, affecting their income and career progression (Mayo Clinic).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>What is being done to help end Period Poverty in the UK?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:17px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Initiatives and measures implemented by the UK Government<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK government has implemented initiatives such as providing free sanitary products in schools and colleges across England, helping to ensure that no girl misses education due to her period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2018\/aug\/24\/scotland-to-offer-free-sanitary-products-to-all-students-in-world-first\">Scotland became the first country<\/a> to provide free sanitary products to all students in schools, colleges, and universities through a \u00a35.2m scheme to fight period poverty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From summer 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/2019\/03\/the-nhs-in-england-will-offer-free-tampons-and-other-sanitary-products-to-every-hospital-patient-who-needs-them-simon-stevens-announced-today\/\">NHS in England<\/a> began offering free sanitary products to all women and girls under their care, and on request.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In January 2020, the UK government launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/educationhub.blog.gov.uk\/2023\/09\/28\/how-the-period-products-scheme-is-removing-barriers-in-education\/\">Period Products Scheme<\/a>, providing students with necessary products at their place of study. By September 2023, 99% of secondary schools and 94% of post-16 institutions had used the scheme. The scheme includes various products like pantyliners and eco-friendly period pants. The scheme has been extended until at least July 2024 to help end period poverty and support disadvantaged students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2019, the UK government introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/period-poverty-taskforce-meets-for-the-first-time\">Period Poverty Taskforce<\/a>. This taskforce, co-chaired by Plan International UK and Procter &amp; Gamble, focuses on reducing the stigma associated with menstruation and improving the availability of menstrual products. The government has also dedicated \u00a3250,000 to support initiatives addressing period poverty, with a strategy to partner with private sector entities to maximise resources and expertise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To ensure menstrual products are more affordable, in January 2021, the government abolished \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/health\/what-tampon-tax-sanitary-products-period-pants-b1129937.html\">tampon tax<\/a>\u201d and reclassified these items as essential goods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They have also announced a range of measures, including making period products freely available in schools, hospitals, and police stations, to ensure widespread access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Charities and organisations leading the fight against Period Poverty<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous charities and organisations are making significant strides in combating period poverty.<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedom4girls.co.uk\/\">Freedom4Girls<\/a>, a UK-registered charity that Initial has partnered with, is dedicated to fighting period poverty in both Africa and the UK by challenging stigmas, taboos, and gender inequalities associated with menstruation.
