Barnsley Hospital is Britain’s cleanest- it’s official

12/02/2010

Barnsley Hospital has been declared the cleanest in the country in a prestigious national healthcare awards scheme.

The hospital won the Hospital Cleaning Award in the renowned Health Business Magazine Awards 2009

The HB Awards concentrate on the many examples of innovation, dedication and teamwork evident since the NHS transformation began in 1997. The Awards recognise and celebrate the significant contributions made each year by NHS Trusts and the individuals they employ.

Judges highlighted a number of successful initiatives introduced at the hospital over the last few, including:

  • A new cleaning contract awarded to HealthcareInitial, which started in April, and sees extra cleaners and a significant increase in hours spent cleaning each week;
  • Work to reduce Clostridium difficile cases each year has seen a 22 per cent reduction in cases;
  • The Barnsley rates for MRSA have been below the average level. In terms of MRSA bacteraemia, the hospital recorded just eight cases in 2008/2009 against a target of 11, while this year has seen just two cases in the year to date. MRSA screening was also rolled out to all patients being admitted to the hospital, including all emergency patients from August 1.

Hospital staff responsible for the cleaning and sterilisation of medical equipment were also praised after winning a handful of prestigious contracts to provide their services to other hospitals in the region.

In its most recent Care Quality Commission inspection, Barnsley Hospital also scored the maximum possible points for safety and cleanliness and for patient dignity and respect.

Heather Whitehead, HealthcareInitial Operations Director for the North said “this is a fantastic success and recognises all of the hard work and dedication of our team at Barnsley. Dawn and her team are totally committed to the high quality services they provide and I am delighted that their achievements have been acknowledged in this way.”

Trust Chairman Steve Wragg said: “It’s terrific when the hard work of staff is recognized nationally in this way.

“I regularly receive comments from our patients and visitors about how clean the hospital is, and this award is a credit to all the staff involved for the effort work they put in each and every day.’’
