Initial Hospital Services implement NPSA Colour Coding Scheme

29/03/2007

The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) Colour Coding Scheme, launched in January this year, is designed to help hospitals reduce the risk of cross infection by colour coding cleaning materials and equipment.

For example, red for bathrooms and yellow for isolation rooms will ensure materials and equipment are not used in multiple areas, thus reducing the risk of cross-contamination. Standardised colour coding across the NHS will make hospitals safer for patients and staff.

The NPSA have requested that all NHS organisations providing inpatient Services in England and Wales agree to a roll-out plan by 31 March 2007 and are fully compliant by 31 March 2008.

Initial Hospital Services have decided to implement the Colour Code Scheme with immediate effect.

On Monday 2nd April Initial Hospital Services are holding a Colour Coding Day throughout their contracts to raise awareness and train staff to recognise this new, safer way of working.

David Bedwell, Initial Hospital Services Commercial Director said that the business is 100% behind the NPSA recommendations,

“Although colour coding has been in place throughout the NHS, this four colour standardisation will assist in educating everyone in what should be used, and where, in order to reduce the incidence of cross contamination.”

“The NPSA has recommended implementation and full compliance by March 2008, Initial Hospital Services is launching the scheme to all employees from today (Monday 2 April 2007).”

“In addition to the launch, staff communication will be ongoing to ensure compliance at all times.”
