National Decontamination Strategy NHS Strategy

1st April 2007 is the target date for the full adoption of the NHS’s National Decontamination Strategy.
This strategy was conceived in 1999 - 2000, when it was decided that the current procedures, systems and equipment used to sterilize reusable medical instruments were unsatisfactory, particularly so with the, albeit limited, risk of passing vCJD.
Where a trust fails to meet those standards by April 1st, they are required to have contingency plans in place, which include using private sterilisation plants or single use instruments.
Initial Medical Services can help, by ensuring those single use instruments are appropriately disposed, providing expert advice on waste packaging and a reliable collection and disposal service.
