Station named best in Britain

14/11/2006

York Railway Station, cleaned by Initial Transport Services, has been named the best in Britain at a National awards ceremony.

The station, which is managed by GNER, scooped two major awards at the National Railway Awards. Firstly it was named as major Station of the Year and then went on to take the most coveted prize of all, the overall award for Station of the Year. York beat more than 2,500 other UK stations to win the accolade.

York station is one of the busiest inter-exchanges on the UK rail network and is used by more than 30,000 passengers each day. The results were announced at a ceremony in London attended by 1,200 rail professionals.

The award judges paid tribute to the management of York Station highlighting its “all round efficient organisation, clean and tidy platforms, clear train announcements, wide variety of food and retail outlets, clean toilets, cash machines and easily legible dot matrix information displays.”

The station, built in 1877, is unquestionably one of the nation’s architectural gems, with its vast sweeping arched roof, light and airy, classical stone covered frontage and well appointed concourse.

Commenting on the award, Mike Bullock, Managing Director of Initial Transport said: “Under extreme conditions we have managed to achieve this recognition for station. My thanks go to Karen Taylor, Contract Manager and her site team headed up by Eileen Adamson and Glynis Jackson.
