Clinical Waste Definition and Assessment

Initial’s experienced medical services team helps define and assess your clinical waste

It can be difficult to know if the waste you produce falls under any regulations. That’s why it’s important to do a clinical waste assessment and know the clinical waste definition.

Clinical waste is generally accepted as waste produced in healthcare or similar activities that pose a risk of infection or waste that may prove hazardous as defined in the Controlled Waste Regulations.

These regulations refer to:

(a) Any waste which consists wholly or partly of human or animal tissue, blood or other bodily fluids, excretions, drugs or other pharmaceutical products, swabs or dressings, syringes, needles or other sharp instruments, being waste which unless rendered safe may prove hazardous to any person coming into contact with it.

(b) Other waste arising from medical, nursing, dental, veterinary, pharmaceutical or similar practice, investigation, treatment, care, teaching or research, or the collection of blood for transfusion, being waste which may cause infection to any person coming into contact with it.

The Department of Health memorandum Safe Management of Healthcare Waste also provide guidance and applies to all parties that produce clinical (infectious) or offensive/hygiene waste.

Initial medical services is ready to assist you in clinical waste definition and clinical waste assessment of waste you produce to ensure that you are complying with your Duty of Care requirements.
