The Challenge
Over 640 million people pass through Network Rail's major stations each year. Keeping these busy environments operating efficiently – including at times of peak demand – is critical.
Network Rail relies on its service partners to ensure stations are clean, safe and comfortable, and to help overcome the inevitable problems that occur from time to time in such dynamic environments.
The Solution
Initial Transport Services is responsible for service delivery to nine major rail stations, including London's Victoria and Kings Cross, contributing to the smooth and efficient running of each.
Working closely with Station Managers and Duty Supervisors, we ensure that platforms, concourses and other public areas are clean and tidy throughout the day. In addition, high-level and window cleaning are carried periodically, as is trackside cleaning and station deep cleaning. We also provide train turnaround cleaning at several stations.
The Benefits
Health and safety is of the utmost importance at each station, of course, and all activities are subject to stringent risk assessments, monitored regularly and updated to ensure best practice is secured throughout.
Regrettably, train stations are considered a potential target for terrorism and therefore the operation must be geared to ensuring maximum public safety. Our staff undergo a rigorous induction process to ensure they are knowledgeable about station security processes and procedures. As an integral part of operations, staff are issued with 2-way radios and have a defined role should an evacuation be necessary.
Our team is often the first point of call for customers and frequently deals with general direction and platform requests, lost children and lost property enquiries. We recognise that we are the 'face of the station' and therefore representatives of Network Rail – a role we take very seriously.
