Hands are a natural breeding ground for germs; in fact they are one of the principal carriers of disease-causing germs. Nearly 80% of infections are spread by hand, so encouraging good hand hygiene behaviours is an effective way to stop germs like bacteria and viruses from spreading. October 15th is Global Handwashing Day (GHD), an annual opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of proper hand washing habits to help reduce cross contamination and prevent the spread of infection, and reduce sickness, in offices and schools.
An office setting is the ideal environment for germs to spread and poor hand hygiene is often the biggest cause of office illness. 1 in 4 office workers don’t wash their hands after using the washroom and may be unaware how easily they can transmit potentially harmful germs as a result. Encouraging good hand hygiene habits within the office can help reduce the risk of cross contamination and reduce illness.
In the lead up to GHD Initial surveyed 5,000 office workers (1,000 responses from each of the following countries: UK, Australia, France, Germany and Malaysia) to see exactly what they get up to in the office washroom – some of the results are quite surprising! You can download a copy of the survey infographic here.
UK specific results and a press release will be issued on GHD – please visit our news section.
Our office hand hygiene toolkit includes a number of posters and desk drops to encourage your colleagues to practice better hand hygiene, you can download the toolkit here.
Initial’s ‘Hygiene Angels’ have been out on the road spreading the word about the importance of proper hand hygiene, in schools across the UK, for the past two years. With requests for visits from the Hygiene Angels growing all the time we have now evolved our hand washing workshop into online 'myLearning' modules, which combine interactive, animated videos, with a quiz at the end to cement learning.
With our new myLearning Schools package we are now able to open up the opportunity to access our FREE learning modules to every school in the UK and more importantly, once registered, the schools are able to run the modules as often as they like and for as long as they like. Alongside other Rentokil Initial businesses we have identified key learning milestones within the National Curriculum across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, in the subject areas of hygiene, entomophagy and plants.
If you would like to register for the myLearning Schools package then please sign up here.
